Postcards

There’s something very nostalgic about postcards. Sending a small greeting on a little card that anyone can read is thrilling. I think that has contributed a little bit to the wild success of postsecret, the medium as well as the practice of sharing secrets.

I love receiving postcards in the mail, and sending them too. It’s great to save on postage, if you are mailing a large quantity of items, $.15 off each piece can add up, especially if you get a great deal on postcard printing. 500 postcards for $33 would certainly qualify.

A few years ago, I designed some super cute birth announcement postcards for a few families, and I think a postcard could make a fun Christmas greeting as well. If it’s too informal for Christmas for you, perhaps you could do a special Thanksgiving or Valentine’s postcard. Get creative, people love seeing pictures of your family any time of the year and the space constraints for messages will keep your updates pithy and interesting!

Consider the humble postcard for weddings as well, they are great for save the dates and RSVPs. Even though some people are going smaller with business cards, a postcard could be great as an oversized business card / small advertisement for your small business. A good design is worth spending time or money on, even for something as small as a postcard. Make it memorable, and send it off!

I was compensated for writing this post. That doesn’t mean I don’t love postcards. I really really do.

The Collapse of Distinction

The Collapse of Distinction by Scot McKain was one of the two business books I read last year. The first was geared towards photography and focused on making yourself stand out, but in a community-building, “everyone can win” way. Then I read the Collapse of Distinction. It also focused on distinction, as you can tell from the title, but in a more classic way.

My first impression was very good. The book is part of the new Thomas Nelson line called NelsonFree where you can download the ebook or audio for FREE if you buy the book. This is great for anyone who enjoys books in multiple formats, and kudos to Thomas Nelson for offering it.

I honestly found the book wandering, the stories slightly disconnected. The content was good, but mostly intuitive. You need to be different and not get sucked into the vortex of offering everything your competitors do. It seemed to take a long time to say simple things, was very repetitive. Reading it gave me good food for thought as a small businesswoman, but not as much as I felt like I should be. The executive summaries at the end of the chapter are probably as valuable as the whole book itself, which is a definite weakness. If you are struggling with finding your niche, you might appreciate this book, otherwise, I wouldn’t say it should be at the top of your reading list. (6/10)

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. SPONSORED: Belly Dance Baby

bellydancebaby requested that I review their site and I was happy to oblige, since they sell many brands of baby  products we use and love!  Their baby division is newer, but do know some people who have ordered from their maternity division, bellydancematernity, and were very pleased.

Pedipeds are really cute soft-soled shoes, we have one pair that I can’t wait for Lexi to grow into.  Kate wore them briefly and she and I both loved them.  I really wanted to get Lexi some Trumpette Mary Jane socks her first winter, but just never did.  They are so adorable on!  They have some really hip clothes for boys and girls from brands like Tea Collection. SPONSORED: Architectural Classics

Architectural Classics is a neat website specializing in period, decorative and classical pieces. They are located in Ireland and offer both salvage and reproductive pieces for the home. As owners of an old house, this site is worthy of a great deal of salivating. There’s a great deal of small touches that would look great in any older home, from door knobs and pulls to knockers, chandeliers, clocks and more.

They also offer letter plates and boxes. I am green with envy. One of my biggest disappointments about this house is that even though we live truly in town, we don’t get door delivery of our mail. I want a letter plate or box and a mailman to bring my mail closer! We do have a pretty ugly mailbox as it is.

If I had a lot of money, I would certainly buy several things for the home sweet home from AC. It looks like a top notch company. They also buy fixtures, if you have some in your attic or what have you that you are looking to unload, you can email them a picture and dimensions and they might make you an offer. Easier than ebay!

Architectural Classics recently began a informative blog where they discuss all things related to their products. And it’s powered by WordPress, so obviously, they are pretty cool. They also have a new forum where you can buy or sell fixtures and discuss lighting, doors and ask your online shopping questions. Overall, they are offering the public a great shop and more catered to people restoring old homes.

This post is a paid advertisement. I am giving Review Me a whirl. It seems like a good way to link advertisers and bloggers and it’s an easy $30 towards the camera I’m saving up for.
