Wimpies (aka Sloppy Joes)

I haven’t posted a recipe since Lexi was born and I want to get back into the habit. We’ve been eating a lot of easier recipes lately, for obvious reasons. Last night we had Wimpies. Some people call these Sloppy Joes. This is the recipe I have been eating since childhood, so I am rather partial to it. Vegetarians can make this with TVP, if you like the taste of that.

WIMPIES

1/2 an onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped (optional)
1 lb. ground beef
3/4 c. ketchup
3/4 c. chili sauce
2 Tbs. mustard
3 Tbs. sugar
1 t. worchestershire sauce

Fry onion and green pepper in oil until tender. Add beef and cook until brown. Drain. Add remaining ingredients. Simmer 10 minutes. Serve on a bun.

  1. Is Wimpie a family name? I’ve never heard them called that! It’s cute.

  2. It’s a regional name. :o)

  3. heehee, yeah.. I think MOST people call ’em sloppy joes. Wimpies sounds cute.

  4. I don’t feel like such a culinary failure when I say “We’re having wimpies for dinner.” as “We’re having sloppy joes for dinner.” ;o)

  5. well technically, if you want to slip even further than sloppy joe, go manwich…. i don’t even bother with the cooking, chopping, etc…

toast up some old buns and slap some miracle whip on there with your manwich and you are good to go.

  6. I didn’t like Sloppy Joes as a child, and though I can admit now that they are just fine, I still can’t seem to get over the hang up. Silly.

Yum! I’ve never heard them called “wimpies”. I’ll have to try this recipe, though! I usually just get the manwich sauce in the can and mix it w/ browned ground turkey! *Blush*

  8. Kristen,

Thanks for a new name for a family favorite. My son, Joe, used to cry when I told him we were having “sloppy joes”…he took it personally and when we all laughed he would cry! Now, I will call them wimpies and hope no one decides to use the name against him!
