FAMILY BONDING IN THE AUGHTS In the eighties, we hiked 34 acres of woods, filled with 15,000 Christmas trees, to find the RIGHT one. In the nineties, we went to a small tree farm, where we got to use a saw and pretend we were on a grand quest in the forest for the RIGHT tree, even if there were only a hundred to chose from. In the aughts, we go to the local Home Depot and chose from the 40-50 available. The friendly employees give it a nice fresh cut and everything. Mom still makes us all leave the house by nine so we can mimic the sacrifice of the old tree farm days.

ABOUT ME: A KEY TO THE QUIZ Question: Where is my hometown? Correct answer: Binghamton, NY. That's right. i am truly a yankee. i've renounced it all and claim the South, but when you are born somewhere and live there more than a dozen years, it has to be your hometown. There's some sort of rule. i awarded 2 points to those who chose other places near and dear to me: Wilkes-Barre, PA, where my mom grew up, i lived there for a short time too. Wake Forest, NC, which is my southern hometown. Chapel Hill, NC, which is my college town, current place of residence and one of the loveliest places on the face of the earth. We call it the Southern part of heaven.
Question: What was my favourite subject in High School? Correct answer: social studies. i am a total history and civics nerd. Most everyone chose English, which got y'all 2 points because it was my second favourite subject. i was never enrolled in band in HS and hated math and science.
Question: How many siblings do i have? Hardly anyone guessed this one correctly, the ones who got it, knew that i have three siblings. They are all younger. 5, 7 and 9 years younger, to be precise. Two sisters and finally, we got a brother.
Question: My favourite hobby is: knitting. i don't scrapbook (yet.) i'd love to sew, but alas, alack, i haven't really been taught. i blog a lot, so writing earned y'all 2 points. i am a rubbish artist, which everyone knew, because i don't recall anyone chosing drawing as my hobby.
Question: I have never visited: Montana. i've vacationed in Maine, Canada and the Bahamas and i spent a lovely summer in western Colorado. O, the memories!
Question: My favourite books are: children's literature. They are fun and freeing! I awarded half credit to those who chose great books and theological works as i really enjoy reading those as well. I'm always reading.
Question: i have belonged to each of the following traditions of faith EXCEPT: Methodist. I was baptised Catholic. I was Assemblies of God and baptist, among other traditions, as a kid. Currently, i am technically a Presbyterian.
Question: I have never: watched the Osbornes. i don't have a T.V. i guess most of y'all know that. i have seen a Broadway show (Cats, in HS). i have climbed a fourteener (a 14,000 ft high mtn.). i was on television regularly as a kid... i was on a nationally syndicated news show. True story.
Question: My favourite movie is: The Princess Bride. Hands down.
Question: If i got my wish, my first son would be named: Elijah Knox. We'd call him Knox. 2 points for those who chose Theophilus McMichael, as Mike did once post about that. 2 points for those gutsy enough to chose Strider, a nice Tolkein name.
The winner was Mike, but he took it a second time. So, the real winner was Meadow, one of my bestest friends, who doesn't blog, which is all of y'all's loss. Thanks for participating and having fun! Congratulations to Ellen for doing so well guessing and many thanks to Dawn Garrett, who made this post possible.

SABBATH REFLECTION Rejoice, the Lord is King! Your Lord and King adore; Mortals give thanks and sing, and triumph evermore; Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!
Jesus, the Savior, reigns, the God of truth and love; When He had purged our stains He took His seat above; Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!
His kingdom cannot fail, He rules o’er earth and heaven, The keys of death and hell are to our Jesus given; Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!
He sits at God’s right hand till all His foes submit, And bow to His command, and fall beneath His feet: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!
Rejoice in glorious hope! Jesus the Judge shall come, And take His servants up to their eternal home. We soon shall hear th’archangel’s voice; The trump of God shall sound, rejoice! —Charles Wesley

THE ADVANCE The Trinity Presbyterian Family Advance was wicked fun. The talks were great, Doug Wilson and George Grant are superb speakers and though i have been thinking about the covenant so much lately that it wasn't completely revolutionary to me, it was nice to have it spelled out articulately and passionately. Nancy Wilson did a great talk for the women as well. The talent show was equally fun and painful, the ball was great and all the people (especially Emily, Jake, Mike, Rachel, Rick, Thomas and Tim) were fun to hang around. i like clove cigarettes even if smoking is not feminine. (Don't worry -- i'm not going to start smoking regularly! very infrequently, if ever, promise!) Rick and Rachel love to discuss theology. Jake gets tipsy really easily. Girls like Tim.

A QUIZ
"God will not suffer man to have the knowledge of things to come; for if he had prescience of his prosperity he would be careless; and understanding of his adversity he would be senseless."
| You are Augustine!
You love to study tough issues and don't mind it if you lose sleep over them. Everyone loves you and wants to talk to you and hear your views, you even get things like "nice debating with you." Yep, you are super smart, even if you are still trying to figure it all out. You're also very honest, something people admire, even when you do stupid things.

COUNTER CULTURAL THOUGHTS Love is sacrifice. Rick often says this, as do other friends of mine. As i was giving some advice a few nights ago, it all made sense to me. Music and movies and culture in general teach that love is something you say. "You make me want to be a better man." "You complete me." "You're my blue sky, you're my sunny day." In reality, no matter what the passion behind them, these words leave you feeling empty, especially when they are said flippantly, without the protection of commitment. True love isn't modeled after culture. True love is modeled after Christ. He loved us not just by telling us so, but by dying for us. Love isn't about what you say at all. It's about what you are willing to do.

ONE OF LIFE'S LITTLE IRONIES Tonight in my small group we were discussing Jonah 1 and someone asked, "Are you being obedient to God and hearing His call, are you being like Samuel or Isaiah or Jonah?" After spending a brief second pondering that question i answered, "None of the above. i'm not a prophet(ess). God doesn't speak to me in the night. i haven't seen the LORD, seated on a throne, exalted. i haven't heard a call to Moscow, Idaho or anything. It's completely different. For us, obedience has to start after discerning what is good and right for us to do, which isn't always as clear as it was for Jonah."
Flash forward to 2:30 AM. i hear distinctly someone whisper my name. "kristen!" i say my roommate's name. "Raquel?" Then again, louder. "Raquel?" No answer. So, lacking other options i whispered, "Speak, LORD, for your servant hears." Yeah, i feel like Samuel.

SABBATH REFLECTION Before Thee let my cry come near, O Lord; true to Thy word teach me. Before Thee let my pleading come; true to Thy promise, rescue me.
Since Thou Thy statutes teachest me, O let my lips Thy praise confess. Yea, of Thy word my tongue would sing, for Thy commands are righteousness.
Be ready with Thy hand to help, because Thy precepts are my choice. I’ve longed for Thy salvation, Lord, and in Thy holy law rejoice.
O let Thine ordinances help; my soul shall live and praise Thee yet. A straying sheep, Thy servant, seek, for Thy commands I ne’er forget. —Psalm 119X

SCHEDULING DILEMMAS i only need one more course and one one-hour PE next semester to graduate. However, it seems a waste to not take as many classes as possible. i aimed to have a Tuesday/Thursday schedule with a MW PE. i registered for: MW - 800 - Jogging TTh - 930 - Southern American Literature TTh - 1100 - Ancient History TTh - 1230 - Dante in Translation This seemed ideal to me. Then i realized i needed at least 12 hours to keep my health insurance. Being sickly these days, it seemed like a good idea. Nothing at UNC really appealed to me, and i thought "Oh! We have an inter-institutional agreement! i can take a class at Duke! They were even offering their class on C.S. Lewis' theology and fiction. Except, it's TTh at 1415. My Dante class ends at 1345. The free bus that runs between UNC and Duke leaves on the half-hour. I'd be ten minutes late to the C.S. Lewis class every time, or have to leave Dante 15 minutes early. My second choice for a class at Duke is a seminar on Martin Luther T 1600-1830. Argh. i need to go do the paperwork Monday. the C.S. Lewis class is full, so maybe i'll put it as my first choice and if God wills me into it, i'll work it out. If they stick me in Luther, i'll enjoy that.

CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES, COME ON! i love the church calendar. i give things up for Lent. Every year i thank God for Advent so that i am reminded again of hope and expectation in the Christmas season instead of being bogged down in exams and shopping. i love it when sanctuaries change decorative colour according to the season (is anyone tiring of green yet?). i don't understand how lots of Presbyterians (esp. Southern Presbyterians) can be so anti-holidays. Biblically, feast days are very appropriate. Does anyone know how this hyper-regulative anti-holiday sentiment came about?

WHAT'S IN A NAME? On Saturday, i went to see my friend Mark play a concert. He played mostly his own stuff (which is AMAZING) and a few covers. After one cover he said, "Mark Heard wrote that song. He's one of my favourite songwriters. My friend Andy and i also like him because his name is a complete sentence. Mark Heard. Like former dook basketball player, Cherokee Parks. Our list usually stops there, right?" Andy nodded. "Can anyone else think of any?" long pause. Then Mark's wife Christina shouted "Kristen Knox!" And Mark said, "our friend Kristen Knox! Spelled wrong, but still, very cool!" Props go to Dawn for discovering it.

WHAT TO DO NEXT YEAR i've been thinking a bit lately about what to do after i graduate. My first priority is to move somewhere with a great church, i figure everything else (job, living situation) will fall into place. Then i had the brilliant plan that i could apply to grad schools near a great church so that i'd be able to do something fun and fulfilling with my time. Already, i have my heart set on doing American Studies at Washington State in Pullman. i am so flighty. i love studying and reading and learning but grad school is not the only place i can do those things. i just need to keep reminding myself of that.

SABBATH REFLECTION Be not far off, for grief is near, And none to help is found; For bulls of Bashan in their strength Now circle Me around. Their lion jaws they open wide, And roar to tear their prey. My heart is wax, my bones unknit, My life is poured away.
My strength is only broken clay; My mouth and tongue are dry, For in the very dust of death You there make Me to lie. For see how dogs encircle Me! On every side there stands A brotherhood of cruelty; They pierce my feet and hands.
My bones are plain for Me to count; Men see Me and they stare. My clothes among them they divide, And gamble for their share. Now hurry, O my strength, to help! Do not be far, O Lord! But snatch My soul from raging dogs, And spare Me from the sword. —Psalm 22C

I REALLY HOPE JOSH S. READS THIS POST i thought today was going to be a wash because of exhaustion due to some drunken reveler calling me at 4 a.m. and yelling at me for not being out partying before i realized it was the right name (Kristen), but the wrong number. However, the day has already redeemed itself. Today in recitation we were supposed to cover free will — Erasmus v. Luther. After briefly discussing the two positions, i gave my students sheets with 7 verses on them, broke them into teams, and had them switch off defending Erasmus and Luther. Conveniently, some verses seemed to support free will and some seemed to support total sovereignty. It's funny how seriously students take such tasks, but i digress. One of my students, a Southern Baptist, was trying to express what Luther would have said about John 14:15 ("If you love me, you will keep my commandments") He said, "it doesn't matter if you love God, or if you keep his commandments. All that matters is that God saved you." i said, "Well, it says elsewhere in scripture that we love God because he first loved us. Perhaps His love enables us to love and obey him, but we need grace to do that." He said, "No, what we do doesn't matter." i've got to start being vigilant against the evangelical antinomianism creeping into UNC...
