SABBATH REFLECTION
The spacious firmament on high,
With all the blue ethereal sky,
And spangled heavens, a shining frame,
Their great Original proclaim.
Th'unwearied sun, from day to day,
Does his Creator's pow'r display,
And publishes to every land
The work of an almighty hand.

Soon as the evening shades prevail,
The moon takes up the wondrous tale,
And nightly to the list'ning earth
Repeats the story of her birth;
Whilst all the stars that round her burn,
And all the planets in their turn,
Confirm the tidings as they roll,
And spread the truth from pole to pole.

What though in solemn silence all
Move round this dark terrestrial ball?
What though nor real voice nor sound
Amidst their radiant orbs be found?
In reason's ear they all rejoice,
And utter forth a glorious voice;
For ever singing, as they shine,
"The hand that made us is divine."

PRE-WEDDING ANXIETY
There are lots of little things to be anxious about when planning a wedding. Today's burning question: Will the organist be able to play Bach's "In Dulci Jubilo"? I refuse to walk down the aisle to Wagner!

LATE SABBATH REFLECTION
The Church's one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord,
She is His new creation by water and the Word.
From heaven He came and sought her to be His holy bride;
With His own blood He bought her and for her life He died.

Elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth;
Her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth;
One holy Name she blesses, partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses, with every grace endued.

The Church shall never perish! Her dear Lord to defend,
To guide, sustain, and cherish, is with her to the end:
Though there be those who hate her, and false sons in her pale,
Against or foe or traitor she ever shall prevail.

Though with a scornful wonder men see her sore oppressed,
By schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed:
Yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, "How long?"
And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song!

'Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation of peace forevermore;
Till, with the vision glorious, her longing eyes are blest,
And the great Church victorious shall be the Church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One,
And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won,
O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we
Like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with Thee:

HOW SWEET IT IS
The doorbell rang in the middle of the afternoon. I got up and found a strange man standing outside with an awkward package for me. It contained no less than 25 Gerbera Daisies from my fiance, just because. They're so beautiful! Extra points for him for choosing my favourite flower. Unfortunately, I have to leave tomorrow morning for a memorial and won't return until late Saturday evening. I will miss my flowers.

CREDENDA DAY
My copy of the newest Credenda/Agenda arrived today. I am, as usual, really encouraged by Nancy Wilson's column. She was giving wisdom concerning mother-daughter relationships and she thew something in there about educating women. Hurrah! I wholeheartedly believe that undereducated women do not make good helpmates or mothers and so we ought to give them a solid education, just like our young men.

SABBATH REFLECTION
My soul, now praise thy Maker!
Let all within me bless His Name
Who maketh thee partaker
Of mercies more than thou dar'st claim.
Forget Him not Whose meekness
Still bears with all thy sin,
Who healeth all thy weakness,
Renews thy life within.
Whose grace and care are endless
And saved thee thro' the past;
Who leaves no suff'rer friendless,
But rights the wronged at last.

He shows to man His treasure
Of judgment, truth, and righteousness,
His love beyond all measure,
His yearning pity o'er distress,
Nor treats us as we merit,
But lays His anger by.
The humble, contrite spirit
Finds His compassion nigh;
And high as Heav'n above us,
As break from close of day,
So far, since He doth love us,
He puts our sins away.

For as a tender father
Hath pity on his children here,
He in His arms will gather
All who are His in childlike fear.
He knows how frail our powers
Who but from dust are made;
We flourish like the flowers,
And even so we fade;
The wind but o'er them passes,
And all their bloom is o'er—
We wither like the grasses,
Our place knows us no more.

God’s grace alone endureth,
And children's children yet shall prove
How He with strength assureth
The hearts of all that seek His love.
In Heav'n is fixed His dwelling,
His rule is over all;
Angels, in might excelling,
Bright hosts, before Him fall.
Praise Him Who ever reigneth,
All ye who hear His Word,
Nor our poor hymns disdaineth--
My soul, O praise the Lord!

IT'S FUN TO STAY AT THE...
I've all of the sudden started loving the YMCA. I go there to work out pretty much every day. I attribute this newfound love to two factors: the boredom of wedding planning and the realization that i can actually read and exercise at the same time. Woah!

HYMNOLOGICAL REFLECTION
Laden with guilt, and full of fears, I fly to Thee, my Lord,
And not a glimpse of hope appears but in Thy written Word.
The volume of my Father’s grace does all my griefs assuage;
Here I behold my Savior’s face in every page.

This is the field where hidden lies the pearl of price unknown;
That merchant is divinely wise who makes the pearl his own.
Here consecrated water flows to quench my thirst of sin;
Here the fair tree of knowledge grows, no danger dwells therein.

This is the Judge that ends the strife where wit and reason fail,
My guide to everlasting life through all this gloomy vale.
O may Thy counsels, mighty God, my roving feet command;
Nor I forsake the happy road that leads to Thy right hand.

This is an Isaac Watts hymn about the Bible. I wish more people sang it and lived it, especially me.

MEDIA PORTRAYAL OF HOMESCHOOLERS
I read in Raleigh's weekly Christian newspaper that the homeschool community is all up in arms about a new WB show about homeschoolers who convince their dad to let them go to public high school. So, I watched it last week just to see what was up. Honestly, I found it hilarious and fun. I'd highly recommend it.

SERMON LENGTH
Disclaimer: Mr. Liechty preached perhaps his best sermon this week on the first portion of John 10. This isn't a gripe against my church, in particular.

I really do not see the point of 50 minute sermons, or really, anything longer than 30 minutes. I think that anything worth saying in an hour should be able to be condensed to 25 or 30 minutes that the congregation could better absorb and walk away with. I have heard the arguments about how we must be trained to sit and listen to 75 minute sermons with rapt attention, that this concentration is reformational and we'll all be better for it. I think it's a bunch of hogwash, myself. A short sermon that has been heavily edited, where every sentence counts is far more compelling than a 75 minute sermon that includes everything. Mike reminded me that this debate has less to do with the length of sermons and more to do with the point of sermons. More and more, sermons are glorified bible studies, going through a text and explaining the historical and biblical context, etc. I do believe in preaching from the whole counsel of scripture, but I think that sermons ought to be gospel-centric, rooted in redemptive history, and demonstrating how all of scripture points to the apex of scripture: Christ's death and resurrection on behalf of the elect, sinners saved only by His grace and for His great pleasure.

SABBATH REFLECTION
At the Lamb's high feast we sing,
Praise to our victorious King,
Who hath washed us in the tide
Flowing from his pierced side;
Praise we Him, Whose love divine
Gives His sacred blood for wine,
Gives His body for the feast,
Christ the Victim, Christ the Priest.

Where the Paschal blood is poured,
Death's dark angel sheathes his sword;
Israel's hosts triumphant go
Through the wave that drowns the foe.
Praise we Christ, Whose blood was shed,
Paschal Victim, paschal Bread;
With sincerity and love
Eat we Manna from above.

Mighty Victim from the sky,
Hell's fierce powers beneath Thee lie;
Thou hast conquered in the fight,
Thou hast brought us life and light;
Now no more can death appall,
Now no more the grave enthrall;
Thou hast opened Paradise,
And in Thee Thy saints shall rise.

Paschal triumph, Easter joy,
Only sin can this destroy;
From sin's death do Thou set free
Souls reborn, O Lord, in Thee.
Hymns of glory and of praise,
Father, to Thee we raise;
Risen Lord, all praise to Thee,
Ever with the Spirit be.

BEHOLD, THE DULLNESS
I don't have a summer job. All I do is wedding planning. Though extremely boring, I have been able to be very productive, securing venues, food, dresses, tuxes, invitations, etc. already. I am trying to spare you from the daily commentary on these small victories. The highlights of my week have been seeing my friend Meadow (and finding her a cute swimsuit at the mall for her trip to Hawaii) and hanging out with the lovely Mrs. Amber Snapp and her excitable, adorable son Jake. I will try to get a more exciting life, or at least think more exciting thoughts, so I can have a more exciting blog.

SABBATH REFLECTION
Why do the heathen nations vainly rage?
What prideful schemes are they in vain devising?
The kings of earth and rulers all engage
In evil plots and in their sin contriving,
They take their stand against our God's Messiah;
They claim they will not keep his binding chains.
The one enthroned in highest heaven, higher,
Mocks them to scorn on them derision rains.
