Whole chickens are often $.69/lb or so — a great deal. The Perdue brand even kindly bags the giblets so you don’t have to touch them to remove them! Here’s how we use one for several quick, easy meals: Continue reading A “feasting” idea for couples or small families

I was talking to a friend Monday who has three small children (all under 3 years old.) She asked me how Lexi was doing and what she was up to. I told her how sweet and friendly she is and how she blows raspberries all day long. Then I told her she was very strong and admitted that I rarely put her down for tummy time since her muscle tone is fine without it and certainly hadn’t done so in well over a week. I declared that I cared so little about milestones I haven’t tried, but I bet if I set her down on her tummy, she’d roll right over. I got off the phone, set Lexi on her tummy and she rolled from stomach to back in less than 90 seconds. So, Lexi, someday when you are reading this, know that you rolled over for the first time at 13.5 weeks, hindered by the lack of interest your mother had in that pursuit. With Kate, I had less to do and spent time on the floor with her, encouraging her. Lexi gets so much less of my undivided attention, but when she does, we have a great time just enjoying each other.

When Mike and I saw this yesterday (cuddled up, reading the Drudge Report together) we got a good laugh out of it: Spring Break at Wal-Mart.

It is that time of year again. The part in which a host of generous souls feel like giving me gifts for some reason. I haven’t done this in a while, so I’ve decided to splurge and buy myself some books, but I don’t know which to buy (or rather, how to select which ones I shouldn’t buy!)
Recommendations?

I noticed in a comment on The Boneman’s blog that read:
Are your non-meritorious good works (an ‘obedient-faith’) required for your final justification?
What say ye, O readers?

I realize I should write something here. I’ve been staring at this screen for seven minutes and I’ve got nothing. Maybe after 5 years and 4 months of blogging, I’ve just run out of inspiration.

About a month ago, in women’s bible study, we were talking about the persecution of the Hebrew Christians and someone said, “They really suffered. People being martyred today, they suffer. We just don’t suffer here in America.” After the usual “mmm-hmmms” of response that general statements in such studies always get, I piped up. “We suffer. We may not suffer like the martyrs and the starving, but we suffer. Loneliness is suffering. There are people in this room that want desperately to have children and they can’t, that is suffering. Our children get sick, sometimes very sick. We suffer.” Then I got the “mmm-hmmms.”
The more I think about it, the more I think that denying our suffering is dangerous. To deny our suffering in some ways is to deny the fall. Our lives aren’t perfect. Sin has broken our world, our relationships, our bodies and our minds. If we think that we have a great family and a great home, wonderful friends and community, no pain, no suffering and no anguish, what do we have to hope for?

The Bickles are living one of every parent’s worst nightmares. They took their son Thomas to his pediatrician for a six month well baby visit and found out he had a brain tumor the size of a raquetball. The tumor has been removed, but Thomas’ fight has just begun. They have so much to worry about, health wise, and they also have mounting medical bills, lost wages, etc.
I’m going to boldly ask you to do two things. Pray for the Bickles and donate $5. Why $5? It’s something accessible that everyone can give. If you can afford to give more, please do. This blog averages 250 visits a day. I’m guessing that means about a hundred people read. $5 x 100 readers = $500 – 1/20th of the total medical bills, enough for more than a month of groceries, half of a monthly mortgage payment. It will take you less than a minute to do through paypal. Let’s bless this family!
UPDATE: Between the article in the DMN and the Blog-a-thon, the Bickles raised over $5,000 in one day! Keep it coming! “Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” I John 3:18

It’s been seven months and I am still just blown away by Andrew Peterson’s last album, the Far Country. We were listening to it on the way to church and then we walked in and… it was playing in between services! Very cool. Anyhow, it’s a screamin’ deal at $11. You need a copy.
There is more
More than all this pain
More than all the falling down
And the getting up again
There is more
More than we can see
From our tiny vantage point
In this vast eternity
There is more
