I was extremely pleased to see that Holden Thorp will be Carolina’s next chancellor. Though I didn’t take any of his classes, I did interact with him many times during my college career, mostly in my capacity as the university photographer’s assistant. He was always kind and gracious, and I remember someone telling me then that he would be chancellor someday. In the twenty-first century, it’s wonderful that a man who only applied to one university and came back there to make his career in teaching and research, could be chosen to lead the institution that he loves. He’s also young enough to lead for quite some time, perhaps like Frank Porter Graham. May his tenure be filled with great accomplishments as the University continues to serve North Carolina and the world.

As April winds to a close, I am still waiting for the joy of Easter. With all of the current busy-ness of life (school, photography, getting the house ready to sell, normal stuff, figuring out life for next year) I feel like I haven’t had a chance to rest and heal. I feel weary. Perhaps “weary of earth, myself and sin.” But I am also anxious or something, I couldn’t tell you what, there’s a lot to worry about but it’s nothing specific. But it keeps me from falling asleep, which aggravates my pain, which makes me more weary. There’s just three weeks left of school, so there is light at the end of the tunnel. It’s times like these that I am forced to hope against hope. Because “there is more / more than all this pain / more than all the falling down / and the getting up again.”

I got tagged for a few memes, so there is also hope I will post again soon.

That Revolution Money Exchange deal is good until May 15th now. I got my $25 and a few $10 referrals, too, thanks! I can’t tell who signed up, but appreciate it.

* Special thanks for inspiration to RMM and AP.

How Right You Are, Jeeves by P. G. Wodehouse
Into each year, some Bertie must be read. (Listened to the audiobook on the way to North Carolina.) 8.5/10

I Am America (and So Can You!) by Stephen Colbert
I am a cliched white person: I love the Colbert Report and thought this book was hilarious. Some chapters are worth reading over and over. 8/10

White Teeth by Zadie Smith
I liked this book, the fragmented relationships and the threads that tie people together were interesting and overall I found it well written. It did have some slower parts. In the world of contemporary novels, it’s a good read, and it’s remarkable when you consider the age and experience of the author. 9/10

Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne
Read with my literature students, for the first time. I enjoyed it, and really enjoyed contemplating the idea of a novel published as a serial and everyone reading it with great interest. Oh, how times have changed… 8/10

I diligently smocked and constructed Easter dresses. We delighted in a wonderful crowd for Easter dinner. There’s also been pain and sorrow, disappointment and dark clouds. But as the sun shines, spring bursts forth around us, we cling to the hope of Easter and know that all things are being made new.
