TCL Reading Challenge 2007

Plan better. Read more. Share more. That’s the 2007 reading challenge here at This Classical Life. It’s simple and flexible and you are cordially invited.

I really like using lists of bests to help plan. When I think of a book I’d like to read, I add it to a list of books to read this year. I always have that list so I know what to reserve from the library and it helps me to visualize what I have finished and am working on quickly. It’s easy to add and delete books. This year I want to work on planning for more GOOD reading (classics, etc.) and not just planning to make sure I continue to read.

If you are up for the challenge, leave a comment so we all know and use the button if you wish.

  1. oooh, i want to hear what you think of Housekeeping….

  2. i, too, want to hear what you are thinking about housekeeping. that was one of those books, for whatever reason, that i read very slowly. Anyway, i have plenty of thoughts so lets discuss when you are through.

  3. I’ve been considering since the first time you posted about this and I think I will participate… I’ll be reading 12 books for book club this year (6 fiction, 6 non), plus several just for fun, including four Wimsey novels I haven’t read yet. We’re about to finish The Princess and Curdie and I might just share about that one as well : )

  4. Count me in, Kristen. I posted my list here:

Funny, I referenced you in the comments section before I ever saw this post. I applaud your reading and only wish that I had planned my reading better at a younger age.

I need to get out of the xanga pit and get a website so I could use your button. I really like it. Also, I will try to write more reviews.

  5. My goal this year is to write more about the books I read. I read some really great ones that I never wrote about for various reasons.

  6. I’d like to join– I don’t know if my quantity of books will change (I read about 35 last year– without a baby!) but I’d definitely like the quality to improve. We have so many books on our “to read shelf,” though, that I’m a bit daunted about where to start. I’ll try the link you suggested and see if it will help organize my plans! Thanks!

  7. Brooke & Sweetpea,
I will certainly post about Housekeeping soon! I’d love to hear your thoughts.

    Amber,
Your book club sounds great! I haven’t fallen into one here like I did in Austin and Richmond.

    Carol,
I admired your ambitious plan in my xanga subscriptions. I wish I had more time to read! You need to switch to wordpress, wordpress.com has free sites and they are very nice…

    Kari,
You are my reading hero. I love it when you “share!” I have several old reviews saved in my bloglines for future light reading. Watch for them this year!

    Allison,
You get a pardon if you don’t read “more” *giggles*

  8. I wish I’d known that you wanted to read Foucoult’s Pendulum. There was a nice used copy at the used book store in NC.

    *doh*

  9. I thought we were supposed to be one flesh… aren’t you supposed to have my list of books to read MEMORIZED?

    ;o)

Just kidding. It’s totally okay. Our awesome library cooperative will have several copies.

  10. Oh, Kristen, that’s one of the things I miss–the Birmingham Area Public Library system where they would deliver books from across the state– my local “DeKalb County system” here even in this big metropolis just can’t match it for efficiency and availability.

  11. My resolution is also to read “good” books, and by “good” I mean what the general population refers to as “good.”

  12. I like the idea of being more purposeful in my reading. I’ve gotten in such a habit of picking up/putting down whichever books catch my fancy. Hmmm. . . Seems like my websurfing habits have translated into how I’m approaching books. While we could probably think of a opsitive point or two in that, overall I’m confident it’s Not a Good Thing.

  13. TG,
It is a good incentive for me to finish books to have a list to check things off of, it’s accountability even if it’s a bit more goal oriented that true reading for pleasure. It helps me to stick with things worth sticking with (for example, books I’m 2/3 of the way through and feel like I’ve gleaned most of the good stuff from and starting to get antsy) though it doesn’t compel me to read things I really hate.

  14. ok, Kristen Brad and I are joining this. We have cut our cable so I think the amount of reading in our house will exponentially increase. We are both readers but will begin to try and post reviews as we finish books and will also keep a running list of what we have read. I am a little intimidated by your reading and writing but we are game.
