Magic City News

So, we’ve been here about seven and a half months.  I’m still discovering the city and finding hidden gems…

Driving around a new city is always tough, but I went from Forest Park to 280 by the Summit by instinct through Mountain Brook this week and I felt good about it.  I’m mastering the roadways!

I finally discovered Rick & Bubba.  They are syndicated around the Southeast on FM radio stations and they giggle a lot, talk about the news and unabashedly about their faith.  The other day they were talking about whether one should tithe the net or the gross.  HELLO!  It’s amazing that they are so popular without compromising.  It’s good, clean morning fun.  You should see if they are on the air in your city.  (Richmonders!  They’re on 93.1)

Whole Foods opened yesterday.  We toured the place Tuesday and went for the grand opening.  I’m excited and trying to remember what 365 items are truly a bargain (milk, evoo and natural peanut butter for sure.)   Leave a comment and let me know what are your WFM must-buys if you ever shop there.

  1. I read once that they had Snappis…I bet they carry Calms Forte, too.

  2. WFM foods we like, all store brand:
-Bags of raw almonds (1 lb. for $4.29, but only since our Trader Joe’s opened and gave them competition!)
    -Organic whole coconut milk ($1.19/can)
-Organic whole wheat tortillas ($1.29/bag of six)
-Organic apple juice (glass bottle, $3.49/64 oz.)
    -Organic Morning O’s ($2.29/box)
-Organic milk ($5.29/gal, though I prefer Organic Valley’s milk for $0.50 more–more local)
-Misc. frozen organic veggies, all under $2/bag (good for winter, when there are no farmer’s markets around here)

That’s all I can think of now. Can you tell I’m a regular? Those items, prices, and quantities just came to me without even thinking…

  3. I can’t believe I forgot to tell about Rick & Bubba! I could just shoot myself in the foot for that – UGH! We. love. Rick&Bubba!!!!!!!!!
(how’s that for ! points?) That’s one of the things we hate most about being west of the Mississippi – we can’t get them here. :(

  4. Oops – hit ‘submit’ too soon –
and WFM – one more reason to add to the list of ‘dying to get back home to the B’ham area’.

  5. when i went down to see beth we rick and bubba-ed it the whole week. she even has a cable station (fox south?) that broadcast’s their show!

    rickandbubbarickandbubbarickandbubbarickandbubba

    i like them a lot, too…

  6. While you’re winding around those roads in Mountain Brook, you just may find the most beautiful church in town (IMO), the one I used to go to: Mountain Brook Presbyterian (not to be confused with Shades Valley Presbyterian, which is quite visible from 280).

It bugs me to no end that none of the stations ’round here carry Rick and Bubba. It’s a crime! Let’s see, they won’t carry a couple of good old Southern guys, but they WILL carry some obnoxious morning show from Minnesota? What the Sam Hill’s up with that??? And there’s also some local afternoon drive time show with two foul-mouthed morons who think they are clever and funny when they are neither. Except for public radio, this is pretty much a radio wasteland (and the public radio station is no great shakes either: be glad you’ve got two GREAT ones: WBHM and WUAL!).

Your post is inspiring a post on my site. Stay tuned.

  7. 365 Blue Corn Tortilla Chips and raspberry soda!
I always buy my oatmeal in their bulk section (and anything else I can), because it tastes so much better than Quaker Oats.

We’re pretty big fans of Organic Morning O’s, too. And Organic Juice. I love the Whole Kids line of stuff they have.

I often get Whole Kids mac’n’cheese, too.

  8. well, it’s been a long time since we shopped at whole foods, but we always had their 365 blueberry honey. its amazing with a little lemon in tea. it’s been too long to remember anything else.

  9. Oh…I miss our WFM in Houston. None here in Indy, but we make do with Trader Joe’s.

I second the 365 brand WW tortillas (although, I like TJ’s Whole Wheat tortillas better now).

The one thing I would stay away from is the new 365 brand baby wipes (we use these when we are out and about–cloth at home). The package we got was just drenched with liquid, which makes them hard to use.

  10. Cassia,
Dry beans, canned beans? I’ll look!

  11. Canned beans. They’re a good deal, PLUS they’re super low in sodium, which is a rare find (like 10 mg versus the more common 400-600 mg per serving).

365 organic tofu is a good deal, too.
