Jesus, With Thy Church Abide

Our church renovated space in this old building, which had a few previous lives but was originally one of the city’s first movie theaters. The building also houses a salon and a martini bar. We’ve been worshipping in the space for a month or so, but we took time to dedicate the building today.

I was glad we sang this hymn today, it’s a great prayer for our church, and the church universal:

Jesus, with Thy church abide;
Be her savior, Lord, and Guide,
While on earth her faith is tried:
We beseech Thee, hear us,
We beseech Thee, hear us.

Keep her life and doctrine pure;
Grant her patience to endure,
Trusting in Thy promise sure:
We beseech Thee, hear us,
We beseech Thee, hear us.

May she one in doctrine be,
One in truth and charity,
Winning all to faith in Thee:
We beseech Thee, hear us,
We beseech Thee, hear us.

May she guide the poor and blind,
Seek the lost until she find
And the brokenhearted bind:
We beseech Thee, hear us,
We beseech Thee, hear us.

  1. I really like this song too.

    we did it a long time ago, happened to be a sunday when my friend karl digerness (music guy at city church san francisco) was visiting red mountain.

    I was out in san fran a couple months ago, working on a record with karl, and I sat in with him on sunday morning and played this song, and I said, “this is an awesome song. why don’t we do it at red mountain?”

    and he said “I don’t know, that’s where I learned it.”

    so I figured it was time we started doing it again.

  2. That’s a great song. :)

    Brian, this is really random, but you don’t happen to know a fellow from the Dallas area named Benj, do you?

  3. Brian,
    That’s hilarious.

    Amanda,
    Doubting that Brian will revisit this comment I will say that I know that Brian knows Benj, for a number of reasons including, but not limited to, the fact that Benj has appread on our churches cds and he comments on Brian’s blog, which is in fact, not the worst weblog in the world.

  4. kristen – you doubt me!

    manders – yup, know benj quite well. I would say we have gotten to be pretty good friends. he’s traveled to play music / write with me I think 3 or 4 times now, and our record that we are currently wrapping up is actually called “the pocta sessions” because all of the songs were either written or co-written with benj.

  5. You might not see this, but I’ll say it anyway; I kind of know Benj through our mutual participation on a guitar/theology forum a few years ago–he’s mentioned you before, Brian, and I have a couple of outtakes from your recording sessions. All lovely, I might add, and I thought I recognized your name. :)
